I received my internship review today. *sigh* It didn't go as well as I had hoped it would. Of course, the review from reference was very good. Unfortunately, the issues that I was having with the processing were really stressed in my review. I was told that I seem to really like archives and I say that I want to work in them but I needed to realize that a large part of this kind of work is processing so maybe I should think about that a lot before becoming an archivist. I was really crushed to tell the truth. I didn't cry but I really wanted to. I worked so hard on that damn project...and I never had any clue if I was doing it right or not. I did get complimented that my end product was very impressive and well done...but that didn't make the review any easier to take. Right now I'm very disappointed...both in myself and the way this was handled. We all knew I was struggling. Yes, I did avoid work at times to keep from processing, but that's because I couldn't handle doing it for 8 hours at a time without anything but a lunch break and I felt like I was doing a horrible job. I wasn't...but I had no way of knowing. Now I'm just really depressed.

If you did so well, even to them, then why not just point out that you felt you could use some more supervision... or when you go to another place to work, then mention that a bit of guidance from a supervisor to make sure you're on the right track would help a lot. :)

Hon, it sounds like your "management" hasn't a clue.
A review shouldn't have any surprises in it, Really.
Continual feedback makes everyone happier and
produces better results.
Also, the goal of a review is to set the stage for
future improvement, that means that while
you may catch some harsh feedback, you should
leave the room with a clear idea where you need
to head and the knowledge that you can get there.

I'm sorry to hear your review was upsetting.

It is your very first shot at anything like this. The end result was that you did WELL. You avoided because you didn't really know if you were doing it right. Next time you can ask for more guidance if you need it. All in all you did WELL. Focus on the positives:-) You learned alot about doing things on your own. AND...It is almost over

Luv and Hugs,
Trisha

sweetie.. it happens. Management sucks, and alas as much as I hate to admit it, I had a similar experience with my internship up north. I'm afraid that I think we get used to a good deal more input down here, expecially at the college, than you do in most of the work world. Stick to your guns, you can do it. ANd if you can't. I can break their knees
