I'm thinking that I would really love to be a middle school teacher. Seriously. It's the age I've most enjoyed substituting for in the last two years. I'm not quite sure how to go about getting to there from here. First I have to figure out what state I want to move to. I'm looking at a few options, but realistically, I could move to any state I wanted to. I don't know how to search for what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a lateral entry teaching job or a post-baccalaureate program for teaching certification where I can find good childcare. I'd like it to be on the east coast in theory, but I'm not adverse to spending a few years wherever if it means I can get my ducks in a row. I'm looking into Teach For America, but I'm not sure if I can qualify for the program. Realistically, I spent the last two years substituting, but I don't know as I could get a positive recommendation from the schools I've worked with. This isn't because I'm a bad substitute, but because I was not available as often they would have liked. I had a lot going in the last two years with having the baby and all of her health issues. My best bet may be to look for a program because then I could build up my reference base before applying for a teaching position. Anyone out there willing to write me a letter of recommendation, assuming that you think I would make a good teacher of course? I'm going to be contacting a few of my old professors from Berea in hopes they will write me recommendations. Man is this scary!

Sounds like a trip to the library is in order! Ask for the Peterson's guides and the Places Rated Almanac. Those are good places to start. I'd be careful to pick a place that's SAFE!

Most States now require their K-12 teachers to get a master's in Ed. within a few years of starting work.

I'll write you a letter, of course.

my advise is the University of Phoenix online. They have a Masters Education program that will give you certification in 2 years. Its all online til you get to student teaching so where ever you moved would be fine. They also have arrangements with several states so if you were to move again its easy to get your certification transfered. Plus its all online so you could do your classwork while the kid naps. Thats what I was looking into before I decided to just screw it and turn to nursing.
