My C++ professor told me today that she wants me to apply for the summer program in the CS department. They are going to be programming robots and she really wants me involved! And she followed that by telling me I'm a good programmer. So I am completely excited by this prospect. The problem is that the program takes ten weeks and I don't know how much money I'll make. It's a forty hour a week position that pays roughly $6.50. But I won't get to spend three months with my dad. I will get between 2.5 and 3 weeks off that I can spend with him, but I don't know how he'll feel about that. I have no idea what to do. I think this could really help me get into the program I'm interested in for grad school. I have no idea what to do....Guidance?

Your dad will probably understand. It is a rough time for everyone with family in the armed forces. If it is only about the amount of time spent with him then I would say, if it is important and you think you will spend all your time with him while there choose the option of spending more time with him. However if it is like you are going there and you will be spending a little time with him and just going back home, I would suggest taking the intern ship. It is huge to be able to put that on your resume. It is also something that you are interested in that will guide your future decisions about a job. All in all if you want to see you dad, aim for quality over quantity time. Go when you can for as long as you can and see him. Figure out something you could do together and make it special. Then you can work here knowing you really took time with your father not just length of time.
