My C++ professor told me today that she wants me to apply for the summer program in the CS department. They are going to be programming robots and she really wants me involved! And she followed that by telling me I'm a good programmer. So I am completely excited by this prospect. The problem is that the program takes ten weeks and I don't know how much money I'll make. It's a forty hour a week position that pays roughly $6.50. But I won't get to spend three months with my dad. I will get between 2.5 and 3 weeks off that I can spend with him, but I don't know how he'll feel about that. I have no idea what to do. I think this could really help me get into the program I'm interested in for grad school. I have no idea what to do....Guidance?

Hey there. We meet at the Diesel in Boston and chatted briefly. For what it is worth when I was in school I had an opportunity like that and turned it down. I could have spent the summer as an intern netting just room, board and a small stipend while helping out around a physics lab. I was paying my own way through school and I decided it was better for me to go an work at the electronics assembly job I knew I could get for $12 and hour instead and sock the money away for next year. I've always regretted that choice. You will gain valuable professional experience taking the job at school. I'd jump on it if I were you. You have to make the right decision for yourself though.
