When we were searching for childcare after Ender was born, I wanted to put him in a home-run daycare because of the small number of children and because that's how I grew up; I like the atmosphere of home-run daycares. I found the Virginia childcare and referal network, and here is the Ohio equivalent: http://www.occrra.org/members.php?pid=14
Basically, you can search for registered childcare providers in your area and see their records. This was very useful; there's a lady on our culdesac who runs a daycare and did NOT have very good reports or reviews. They include safety information in the reports. They are reports from regular inspections that make sure providers have proper safety locks, paperwork, etc. Anyway, highly recommend it, on the Virginia site there were a lot of good tips and articles about choosing childcare.
