Today I got a letter in the mail confirming that we have paid off the first of my student loans! *happy dance* Yeah. That is so awesome! Granted, I still have four loans to pay off, but I've paid off a quarter of the total amount already. So things are going fantastically on that front.

Also...we have officially completely paid off our credit card with the highest interest rate! Now we just have two more credit cards to go and we'll be completely debt free on that front! Hooray! We're grown-ups! Or at least looking like it.

We are also fixing our car using cash...no credit despite it being about $500 including labor.

I made the decision to change my payments to take care of the highest rate account this month. I hope to make one of the two disappear by May, and then I can have an extra $80 a month for saving.

Personal Finances should have been a required class in middle school a LONG time ago. They are requiring it in TN for c/o 2013 at the HS level.

I'm not surprised it is taking so long for them to start teaching real financial skills to students. It is not in the best interests of credit card companies and the like for people to actually *understand* how interest and credit work. And so through political contributions...yeah. *insert conspiracy theory here*

I actually had a class in high school that went over credit cards and mortgages. But it wasn't required. And I went to a federally funded school, so they had different priorities (which is why I actually had comprehensive sex ed too).

You to TOTALLY ROCK for working towards paying off your debt. Honestly, it's the greatest thing I've ever done for my quality of life. Debt = slavery and the freedom of not being in it is totally worth never being in it again.

Realistically, [livejournal.com profile] elvnsword and I realized that we don't want to stay in the military for the rest of our lives. And with the Tadpole making an appearance soon, we can't just get out of the military without a serious backup plan and money stuff under control. Add to that my chronic fear of ending up homeless and poor...well, let's just say I'm a little obsessive about paying off bills and saving. It scares me to see how many people aren't paying attention to any of it at all. Thank you for the encouragement!
