Grown Up

I had a moment yesterday where I realized that I *actually* am a grown up. *chuckles* You would think it would sink in by now, but I basically feel the same as I always have and the only thing that lets me judge this sort of thing is by how I react to stuff.

It has been snowing in Cleveland for most of the weekend. It was particularly heavy yesterday. The roads were kinda slick and I had to drive down a really steep exit ramp to get to my class. I hit an icy patch and slid yesterday. I turned the wheel at an angle, didn't hit the brakes and let off the gas. I hit the safety curb at about ten to fifteen miles an hour, bounced off and got control back.

Now previously, I would have freaked. Seriously. Instead, I kept driving the half mile left to my class. I got out there, assessed the damage, and called [livejournal.com profile] elvnsword. I told him that I had slid into the safety curb but there didn't appear to be damage and not to worry. (We kinda have this psychic link thing and so it's better to tell him why he's suddenly got the feeling something is wrong.)

I went home at lunch with no problems. But when I got back to the class I noticed the tire seemed to be smoking. I thought maybe it was something wrong with the rotor or something. The tire pressure light came on in the dash so I had [livejournal.com profile] elvnsword call the car rental place.

I finished up my workshop and got home. I parked downstairs and went up. [livejournal.com profile] elvnsword had been in contact with the rental car people and said we were supposed to take the car to the airport to have it checked and possibly trade for a new car. So he met me with the baby all dressed and ready to go.

When we went downstairs, the tire looked a little low. We decided to try and drive it anyway as it was really hard to tell in the snow. We got out of the parking lot and ten feet down the road when we decide the tire sounded flat instead so we turn around immediately and come back to the hotel.

We then call the roadside assistance. After the nice man comes and changes the tire, we drive to the car rental place. I turn in the statement about hitting the safety curb at an angle. We get a new car and go on about our day.

The astounding thing for me is that I didn't panic. Not once. I had some nervousness while [livejournal.com profile] elvnsword was talking to the car rental people, but only because I wasn't there and couldn't do it myself. For once in my grown up life, I wasn't sitting around beating myself up waiting on someone to yell at me.

Maybe it's because of how the accident went. I could have very easily lost control of the car, hit the guardrail and flipped the car. I seriously could have died. But I didn't. I did what I had been taught to do and I was driving seriously slow anyway. But if I hadn't been me who always drives like a grandma...yeah. I had a car accident and all I did was pop a tire. And I stopped waiting to hear my dad yell. It doesn't get more grown up than that.
